To ride a motorcycle on the road you need a Motorcycle Licence (Class 6).

The first step is to get your Basic Handling Certificate.

The Procedure:
The actual Basic Handling Test only takes around 15 minutes to complete, and tests your ability to balance on and control a motorcycle, but the time required will vary depending on your skill level.

We offer a range of options that give you time to practise, (experienced riders only) or the training you need before you sit the test.

Choose which of the following best suits your level of experience and confidence. (other options can be tailored to your needs if required)

  1. Basic Handling Test Only - (MCBH) If you are already confident on a motorcycle, this may be all that is required. This includes 15 minutes to have a quick practise of the test and get used to the bike.  This will be conducted on a geared motorcycle, so you need to confident. If it has been a while since you last rode we recommend looking at our other options. It is a test and needs to meet the required standard. Total time 30 minutes.  Click here for conditions to use an automatic motorcycle.
  2. Basic Handling Test with some training - (MCBHT1) If you can already ride, but want some more time to get some instruction and tips, then this option gives you 45 minutes of riding and instruction time with our assessor.  Together you will go over the skills required for the Basic Handling Test before you sit it. Total time 60 minutes. This is conducted on a geared motorcycle, so you will need to have ridden a geared motorcycle before.  If you need to learn to use gears, look at the next option. Click here for conditions to use an automatic motorcycle.
  3.  Basic Handling Test for Beginners - (MCBHT2) This consists of 75 minutes of training and then the test if you are ready to sit it. Total time 90 minutes. This is aimed at new riders or for those who want more time and training. This will be conducted on a geared bike. If you do not have any previous experience on a motorcycle we recommend option 4 (MCBHP).Click here for conditions to use an automatic motorcycle.
  4. Geared Bike Basic Handling Package Deal. - (MCBHP)This option is aimed to teach you to ride a Geared Bike not just to Basic Handling Test Level but to a level that you can ride on the road. It is split into two parts. The first part is completed on a fully geared motorcycle. You will receive 1 and 3/4 hours  of training, then the test. Total time 2 hours.  This is normally enough time pass the Basic Handling Test on the automatic motorcycle. The next step requires you to pass the theory  test at the AA to obtain your Learner Licence, then re-book with us for 2 and 1/2 hours of training on a geared bike. This section includes a training session in a large car park and builds up to riding on the road as your skills improve.  This second part must be completed within 3 months of achieving your Basic Handling Certificate. This Package deal is currently subsidised by ACC to encouage training to lower the accident rate of learners. Call for details. Numbers are Limited.
